Matter President Quenton Marty and VP of Procurement and International Programs Mike Muelken with school children in Zambia, who paused their play for a moment to show off their new indestructible soccer balls.

Matter staff members are on the ground in Africa, visiting current partners and projects, as well as developing new relationships to find the best ways to expand access to health and food on the continent. Right now, President Quenton Marty and VP of Procurement and International Programs Mike Muelken are in Zambia. In the past few days, they’ve visited the Minister of Agriculture as well as the director of our fantastic partner on the ground Health Hope Zambia.

“Many conversations happen all the time to ensure the kids are fed, educated, clothed, and that their other basic needs are met.  However, very little happens when it comes to the kids having fun.”

The Matter team also had the opportunity to visit a boarding school and present the students there with special indestructible soccer balls, a gift sponsored through the generosity of the Welsh Foundation. Quenton writes, “Many conversations happen all the time to ensure the kids are fed, educated, clothed, and that their other basic needs are met.  However, very little happens when it comes to the kids having fun.” Playfulness is such an important part of childhood, and making sure that children are able to laugh and play, no matter where they are born, is just another important piece of Matter’s mission.
