Last year, over 100 million meals were missed in Minnesota; 40% of these by youth. Each year, the summer months prove to be an especially trying time for families whose children had been receiving Free and Reduced Lunch at school. In an effort to ease this burden, Matter has partnered with Summer Loaves to provide 26,000 MatterBox lunch meals to kids throughout the summer.
To make this happen, Matter has connected with Lord of Life Church in Maple Grove. Matter and Lord of Life have worked together in the past, but the church really stepped up to the plate this year by committing to fundraising and financially support the MatterBox program, as well as sending 30-50 middle schoolers to the Matter warehouse each week to package boxes. The group has even committed to teach the kids about fundraising throughout the summer with Penny Wars.
“It’s been really fun to watch the youth open their eyes,” says Amanda Clancy, from Lord of Life, “We talk a lot about how we are called. God created the Earth, He created man and woman. He told them to take care of the Earth, to be His hands and feet and help one another. That’s what we are called to do, to help one another. No matter what we are doing-if we comfort a sad friend, visit the lonely, feed the hungry-whatever we are doing we do because we are called to help.”
Leading funding of this summer program is provided by BMO Harris Bank, whose generous contribution will make a significant impact in filling the missing meal gap in Minnesota with healthy meals.
